Main Objective(s) Our overarching objective is to enhance the capacity of justice sector institutions and professionals within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) to effectively respond to gender-based violence (GBV) and promote gender equality. Specifically, our project aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Conduct Comprehensive Institutional Capacity Assessment:
    • To assess the institutional capacity needs and gaps within the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and Council of Judges in KRI related to GBV cases.
    • To conduct in-depth Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with key stakeholders across four governorates to identify challenges and opportunities for improving GBV response mechanisms.
    • To compile findings into a detailed report for dissemination to UN Women and other relevant stakeholders, informing future policy and programming efforts.
  2. Provide Technical Assistance to Address Protection Gaps in SGBV Laws:
    • To offer targeted capacity-building sessions for the Gender Equality Unit within the MoJ in each of the four governorates.
    • To deliver comprehensive training sessions, inclusive of recommendations for addressing existing protection gaps in laws related to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
    • To ensure equitable participation of MoJ members, with a focus on gender balance and representation across various roles within the ministry.
  3. Conduct Orientation Sessions to Promote Women’s Legal Rights and Support GBV Survivors:
    • To organize orientation sessions for justice sector professionals across the KRI region.
    • To engage an international legal expert/trainer to facilitate sessions focused on promoting women’s legal rights and supporting survivors of GBV.
    • To conduct sessions in multiple locations, ensuring broad participation and accessibility for justice sector professionals from diverse backgrounds.

By achieving these objectives, our project seeks to strengthen the capacity of justice sector institutions and professionals, improve legal frameworks, and promote gender equality and justice for all individuals in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
